My client’s grandfather participated in the Battle of Normandy, the Allied operation that launched the successful invasion of German-occupied Western Europe during World War II. The operation was launched on June 6, 1944 with the Normandy Landings (D-Day).
Restoring this photo and colorizing it presented several challenges. First, it came to me as a very low resolution digital image and was also very tiny in size. An actual paper image did not exist, so it could not be re-scanned. My client, however, hoped to be able to print the final to 8″ x 10″.
I achieved this by printing the original on high quality photo paper, and then I scanned the print at a 1200 dpi resolution. After several rounds of processing I was able to successfully colorize the image and turn it into a beautiful 8″ x 10″ photo for my client to frame.
